Clean, affordable and reliable power

Renewable Energy

Promoting access to clean, affordable and reliable energy that reduces environmental degradation and supports productive use of energy in rural communities.

Energy poverty is not a separate problem from agricultural poverty — it is the same problem seen from another angle. A farmer without a pump is limited to one rainy-season crop. A household cooking on an open fire spends hours collecting firewood and breathes smoke while doing it. A clinic without power cannot refrigerate a vaccine.

ISSED promotes renewable energy solutions that are affordable at household scale and that pay for themselves through what they make possible.

Four priorities

  • Solar-powered irrigation and water pumping that enable year-round farming rather than a single rain-fed season.
  • Clean cookstoves and improved cooking solutions that reduce deforestation and indoor air pollution.
  • Off-grid solar electrification for households, schools and health facilities.
  • Biogas and other renewable alternatives that reduce reliance on firewood and fossil fuels.

The emphasis throughout is on productive use of energy. Light in the evening matters; a pump that adds a second growing season changes a household’s economics permanently.

How we measure it

Objectives and indicators

4 Objective 4

Expand access to clean, affordable and reliable renewable energy solutions that reduce environmental degradation and support productive use of energy in rural communities.

Expected outcome

Households and community facilities adopt renewable energy solutions, reducing reliance on firewood and unreliable power.

Indicators

  • Number of households and facilities with access to solar or other renewable energy solutions
  • Number of clean cookstoves distributed and in active use
  • Percentage reduction in firewood consumption among targeted households
  • Number of community members trained on productive use of renewable energy

Verified through: Distribution and installation records, household surveys, monitoring visits
