From subsistence to sustainable livelihoods

Farmer Empowerment

Training, mentorship and extension support that help farmers move from subsistence farming to sustainable, income-generating livelihoods.

Most of the households ISSED works with farm to eat, not to earn. Farmer empowerment is the pillar that changes that relationship — helping a household see its land, labour and knowledge as productive assets rather than a means of bare survival.

ISSED delivers training and mentorship directly in the communities where farmers live, then stays with them. Extension officers follow participants across a full growing season, so advice arrives when it can actually be acted on: at land preparation, at planting, at the first sign of pest pressure, at harvest and at the point of sale.

What this looks like in practice

  • Practical, in-field training on improved agronomy, planning and record keeping.
  • Farmer-to-farmer mentorship, so successful practice spreads through people communities already trust.
  • Season-long extension support, rather than a single workshop with no follow-up.
  • Market awareness, so that increased production translates into increased income.

The measure of success is not attendance. It is adoption — the share of trained farmers who are still using a new practice a season later, and what that practice did to their yield and their income.
